Exactly who invented these tasty treats is something that still stands to be debated. Some recipes date back to the 1700s, while dipping these tart fruits into the caramel is something that may (or may not) have originated in the late 1800s. Regardless of who invented what and when, New Englanders love these chewy treats. Try your own variations on this recipe to create a unique twist on a New England classic.

Caramel Dip
2 cups granulated sugar
1⁄2 cup light colored corn syrup
1⁄2 cup water
2 cups half-and-half
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1⁄4 tsp. salt
Method
In a large saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup and water. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently until dissolved. Continue boiling without stirring until golden brown, about ten minutes. Slowly stir in half-and-half, vanilla and salt. Boil until candy thermometer reads 235°, stirring frequently. Approximately 45 minutes.
