Originally founded in the Cornhill section of Boston in 1825, Brattle Book Shop now resides on West Street in Boston's Downtown Crossing. Brattle Book Shop has been in the hands of the same family since the late 1940's, and is today under current ownership and direction of proprietor, Ken Gloss. The well-known building currently comprises three floors in addition to their popular outside space in the adjacent empty lot. Today, Brattle Book Shop is known as one of the oldest and largest antiquarian book shops in America. Even if buying books isn't on your holiday shopping list this year, you should still stop by to soak in a bit of New England's rich history.
Brattle Book Shop offers something for just about everyone. Outside of the store you will find the sale lot, the first and second floor is packed with general used books, while the third floor is designated for rare and antiquarian books. Additionally, the book store has an experienced buyer on site every day in case you're interested in selling a few books found in your grandparent's attic or picked up at the neighborhood tag sale. What's really neat about this shop, is that they also specialize in renting out books for movie sets and film productions - or if your looking to outfit your personal library with certain book collections, they are there to help you pick just the right pieces.
Brattle is open Monday - Saturday from 9 AM - 5:30 PM, or if you can't make it down to the shop in person, you can view their online retail library through their site. Additionally, gift certificates make the perfect gift for the book-lover in your life. And even if you have no real purchase in mind, we recommend that you stop by the shop today and get lost in the Brattle book collection for a bit - it's an escape worth venturing on!
